WELCA is the women’s organization of the church (Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America).  Messiah’s WELCA is made up of an Executive Board (co-leaders, secretary, treasurer, and projects chairman ); a Service Committee, which provides funeral luncheons; a Social Committee, which plans for celebrations, Southwest Conference gatherings, and other social occasions; two circles, Hope and Joy; and the Stitch-and-Chatter group, which meets in the winter months to make quilts and to cut and sew fabric strips for rag rugs.  WELCA raises funds through two basement and bake sales—one in the spring and one in the fall—and through the year-round sale of rag rugs and baby quilts.  These funds go toward church needs and a variety of charitable organizations.  The handmade quilts are usually donated to Lutheran World Relief; in 2012, however, they were sent to tornado victims in southern Illinois.  Other activities include a Celebration of Women Salad Luncheon, usually in June, a Young-at-Heart Luncheon in August to honor the women of the church who are 75 or older, and sponsorship of the American Red Cross blood drive.
